Curated by Angelika Stepken and Philipp Ziegler, the exhibition Future Perfect. Contemporary Art from Germany has been put together by sixteen artists – being a part of the middle and younger generations – mainly based in Berlin, but originate from various countries such as France, Norway, Greece, Vietnam, and Mexico.

The exhibition is trying to question our ability to speak about the future in the present world. "Future perfect," in fact, is a tense describing events and activities that will be completed (or not) before, after, or at some point in the future. The tense can also be used to predict events and is one of the more enigmatic forms of describing time. From this perspective, the works that constitute the exhibition pertain to the issue of an uncertain future and what can create it – in relation to the past and present. The future becomes a concept, an object of speculation and predictions, an attempt to escape from the patterns of thinking, but also a reference to contemporary struggles and thoughts about possibilities and impossibilities.

The opulence of the ideas is portrayed in the form of their presentation. The artists, who contribute their creative output to the exhibition, use a variety of media: film, photography, sculpture, painting, installations, and collages. The artists encourage the public to employ the same creative approach, as they did in their works, to the interpretation of the past and thinking about what may possibly lay ahead of us. Perhaps a joint creative activity is just what we need to reduce the fear of a vague tomorrow?

Future Perfect is the most recent touring exhibition from the ifa(Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, www.ifa.de).
